Appalachian Technologies
Filtering Service
What is Spam?
Spam is flooding the Internet with
many copies of the same message, in an attempt to force the message
on people who would not otherwise choose to receive it. Most spam
is commercial advertising, often for dubious products, get-rich-quick
schemes, or quasi-legal services.
Email viruses
With its immensely growing popularity,
the Internet has become the perfect medium for transmission and
spread of computer viruses. Viruses can email themselves automatically,
even without revealing their existence to the user, often choosing
to replicate themselves to friends and people in a stored address
book. With the current day and age of the Internet, it is important
to be mindful of computer viruses and the means through which they
spread.
What can Appalachian Technologies do
about Spam and viruses coming to my email?
Recognizing this vastly growing problem,
Appalachian Technologies has instituted an email scanning process
for our customer's email traffic in an attempt to identify unsolicited
spam messages as well as harmful viruses infected messages in order
to make our customers Internet experience more pleasant.
How does it work?
All emails sent to our customers pass
through our email scanner before arriving in the customers mailbox.
Messages are automatically compared against databases of known offenders
and their content is automatically processed for spam or virus related
material. Messages deemed with a gross number of forbidden content
are then discarded and never arrive at your mailbox.
How much does it cost?
How do I sign up?
Our email scanner service is provided
to our Internet customers free of charge, as part of our Internet
service. Customers will automatically receive email filtering when
they sign up for their Internet account.
Existing Customers
I see {Spam?} or {Virus?}
in the subject of my messages, what does this mean?
The {Spam?} and {Virus?} tags are inserted
by our email scanner into the subject of a message when that message
is believed to have Spam or Virus content but didn't score high
enough for it to be automatically discarded. If you receive one
of these messages with Spam or Virus in the subject which you believe
to be a valid email message, please forward a copy of the message
to support@apptechnc.net for review.
Is it possible to still
receive spam with the email scanner?
Yes, the email scanner is not meant
to be a 100% catch all, there is simply too much material in too
many varieties for such a solution to exist. Its very possible unsolicited
material will still pass through undetected. The Appalachian Technologies
email scanner is meant to actively reduce the number of unsolicited
and harmful messages our customers receive. We still highly encourage
good practies in safe guarding your email address.
Does email filtering alleviate
the need for an Antivirus program on my computer?
No, our email filtering only processing
email messages incoming to your computer. It is still possible to
receive a virus through traditional means such as a floppy disk.
Appalachian Technologies highly recommends the use of a Antivirus
software package installed on your computer.
